The Office of the Regional Chief - Assembly of First Nations Nova Scotia (AFN NS) represents 13 Mi’kmaw First Nation communities in Nova Scotia. As a solutions-focused advocate, AFN NS is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Climate & Water Coordinator. The successful candidate will lead the climate and water activities within the Nova Scotia Region.
The Climate & Water Coordinator will act on behalf the Nova Scotia AFN Regional Office to support the AFN’s ongoing climate-related and water-related projects and initiatives.

The Climate & Water Coordinator responsibilities include, but not be limited to, the following:
➢ Liaise and coordinate with the relevant AFN’s Sectors and in this way inform the AFN National Water and Climate teams and AFN staff; and any other networks that might be created as this work moves forward;
➢ Work closely with the AFN National Water and Climate teams and AFN staff to organize, coordinate, facilitate and attend regional meetings and engagements including the coordination of meetings and engagements dates and coordinating invitations, tracking attendance, and notetaking as needed;
➢ Liaise and coordinate with AFN National Water and Climate teams and AFN staff and any others including regional First Nations leadership, elders, knowledge keepers, youth, and women through formal and informal means;
➢ Following up on all communications appropriately and in a timely manner;
➢ Participating in teleconference calls and/or virtual meetings as required;
➢ Initiating and preparing regional documents and reports, as required;
➢ Collecting and coordinating local and regional data and information to transmit to the AFN National office;
➢ Assisting local First Nations to understand and act with respect to climate-related and water-related issues, as appropriate;
➢ Seek additional resources to support other regional climate, water and environmental initiatives to help build greater capacity at the regional level and seek other sources of funding for this position;
➢ Prepare monthly reports summarizing activities during the associated month, including description of activities, tracking time associated with all efforts, planned next steps and any recommendations;
➢ Interfacing with regional and federal officials, as agreed upon, with the AFN National Climate and Water teams and AFN staff;
➢ Other related duties as required.

Qualifications:
• Experience working with Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia and knowledge of customs and perspectives;
• University degree in related field or demonstrated experience;
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment;
• Excellent communication, public speaking, writing and editing skills;
• Strong organization, communications, time management and writing skills;
• Ability to build and maintain professional relationships;
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Email, Browsers, etc.;
• Knowledge of the Mi’kmaw language is an asset;
• Must be willing to travel, have a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s licence.

Employment type: Term contract, Apr 2023 to Mar 31, 2024 (with possibility of renewal).
Salary: Dependent upon qualifications and experience.
Location: AFN Regional Office, Millbrook, Nova Scotia.
Start date: April 2023.

The Field Assistant will perform duties such as loading and unloading tools or materials, washing excavated trenches, core cutting, cutting channel samples, till sampling, and other duties as required.

This position is located at the Project site, working on a 2 week in/2 week out rotation.
